Where To Eat In Saugatuck? The Best Saugatuck Restaurants Today

It’s time we update our list of the Best Saugatuck Restaurants. After all, we are all about food, and like keeping things fresh.  It was The New York Times who exclaimed, “At Wickwood, life revolves around food and wine.”

“People who love to eat are always the best people.”
~ Julia Child

And, since we focus on food so much, we make sure we know the Saugatuck food scene well. So, when it’s time to venture out and explore Saugatuck’s restaurants, our guests are in the know. Life’s too short for spending time in a mediocre restaurant. No matter the mood you’re in, or the atmosphere you’re looking for, Saugatuck’s best restaurants have what you want.

Here’s Our Best Saugatuck Restaurants List Of Who Makes Our Mouths Water Today!

Some of the best Saugatuck restaurants are where you find us eating, given a chance. And, just because a restaurant is not on this list does not mean we don’t eat there, too. This is just our favorites list for today. Just so you know, in Saugatuck, you may dress up or stay casual and cozy. Wear what you like and feel good doing it. There are no dress codes here.

Bowdies Chophouse | Downtown Saugatuck

Award-winning and intimate, we love a seat at the bar. By the time you’ve enjoyed your first cocktail (try the Corpse Reviver | beefeater, lillet, lemon, cointreau, absente. Or, the Sazerac  | knob rye, sugar cube, peychauds bitter, absente) you’ll feel like another fun-loving member of the community. Order the Shrimp Cocktail, Smoked Duck Ravioli, or Oysters on the Half Shell to start. And, yes. We also order Truffle Fries and Brussels & Belly for the table. So good. But, remember what you came for: the steak. We’re partial to the Bone In Filet and the Cowboy Ribeye. Carefully sourced. Expertly cooked. If you’re not in the mood for steak, the Faroe Island Salmon or the Roast Chicken are both excellent choices.

Everyday People Cafe | Downtown Douglas

A perennial favorite for both tourists and locals. With two separate bars and three different dining rooms, there’s sure to be just the seat you were hoping for. Chef and owner Matt Balmer features an eclectic menu with bold, exciting flavors. We love their Greek Salad (never had a better one in Greece!), Drunken Shrimp, Almond Crusted Walleye, Mussels, Wasabi Tuna, and Spanish Tapas. Terrific wine and beer list, and they know how to make a great martini.

Salt of the Earth | Downtown Fennville

This kitchen makes magic using our local ingredients. Intense and exciting flavors prevail beginning with creative Sips such as the Hemingway Mojito, Apple Crisp or a Scratch Made Margarita while you await your Grilled Hanger Steak, Pan-seared Walleye, Seared Scallops, or Wood-fired Pizza. Finish with Toasted S’mores or S.W. Michigan Milkshake … with local gelato and cream! Every weekend there’s terrific live music.

~ Mark Twain

Clearbrook Grill Room | Saugatuck

The Jeltema’s have created a lovely haven for fine dining overlooking their beautiful gardens and golf course. Truly a delightful, relaxing experience, with energy in the air. This is a favorite of locals who crave their Camp-Style Griddled Walleye, the Grilled Wild Salmon, Parmesan Crusted Pork Chop, their fabulous pastas, pizzas and The Mackinac Fudge Sundae. The bar is always lively and that’s one reason it’s one of the best Saugatuck restaurants!

Butch’s | Downtown Holland

Consistently fabulous food in a white linen dining room OR a lively pub setting … with an amazing selection of retail wine, beer, and cider in between. Owner Butch and Chef Ryan cook with the seasons — Grilled Halibut, Hand-cut Ribeye, Kurobuta Pork Chop — and a terrific wine, beer, liquor, and cocktail list. We know we’ve joined the party when we walk into Butch’s!

76 | Downtown Holland

Love the atmosphere and the level of service. Fun, festive, never pretentious. We immediately order the Smashed Avocado for the table. That, and a draft beer from Bell’s means we’re off to a fantastic start. Next, the Shaved Brussels or the Butternut Squash Bisque taste just right. We are delighted that the Really Good Lemon Chicken is aptly named, but we also love the 5 fish varieties offered every evening. Crispy Lake Michigan Perch Platter? Yes, please! Of course, they have the wine and handcrafted cocktails to match each and every course. The Butterscotch Bread Pudding and Cathy’s Chocolate Cake satisfy our discriminating sweet tooth, every time.

Coast 236 | Downtown Saugatuck

The bright and clean decor has you feeling like you just walked into a beachfront restaurant. We love a seat at the bar, but every seat in the house is a good one. Start with Pistachio-Mint Pesto Lamb Lollipops, Tuna Tartare, or Truffle Fries. Share a Beet Tower piled high with Squash, Avocado, and Chevre. Move on to Local Trout with Mandarin Miso Glaze, Berkshire Pork Chop, or Bucatini. Amalfi Lemon Cake is our choice for dessert, but the Chocolate Shot Glass with Bailey’s Irish Cream sure makes for a great nightcap.

Keeping It Casual | Going out and enjoying great food doesn’t have to be a fancy affair. When you want things relaxed, here’s where to go for a mouthwatering meal.

Southerner | Saugatuck

A delightful dockside location along the Kalamazoo River, James Beard nominated Chef Matt Millar brings his Southern cooking to Saugatuck. Heavenly Fried Chicken (Nashville or Habenero Hot if you dare), Flaky Biscuits, Tori’s Pickles, Braised Greens, Mushroom and Dumplings, Catfish Piquant. Of course there’s also the Apple Gouda Salad, Grassfed Beef Burger, and Benton’s BLT. Wine & beer lists are limited, but their selections are superb. Cocktails are ALWAYS carefully crafted and pack a punch.

Pennyroyal | Saugatuck

We love everything that comes out of Missy Corey’s kitchen. Always fresh, flavorful, well-balanced, and appropriately portioned, we like it all. The interior is cozy and very charming. The menu is small, always changing, and never disappoints. Make sure and check the special of the day because they are often inspired by something just harvested from their organic farm! We love the patio expansion and can’t wait for the arrival of their liquor license. In the meantime, they make a magnificent latte or dirty chai, both with Madcap Coffee. And, please … save room for a sweet! Pasty chef Bryan Kemp uses the best ingredients and

~ Virginia Woolf

Guardian Brewing | Saugatuck

This bright and airy brewery (led by a female brewmaster!) makes great beers and delicious food. We love the creative, rotating taps and appreciate the vegan and gluten free food options. The menu is small, but special. Try the Tacos (Pork Carnitas or Beyond Meat), the Roasted Squash and Kale Salad, or the Reuben (Regular or Tofu). And for dessert…the Peanut Butter Cookie with house-made Popcorn Ice Cream is pretty spectacular. We love the new patio that offers expanded outdoor seating, great live music, and pop-up yoga classes!

Grow | Downtown Saugatuck

Real foods, with names you can pronounce, from local farms and flavors you’re going to love. All this comes to your table with a smile at Grow. We love the Mitten Salad, the Carrots and Lentils, and we’ve never tasted a better Waffle. Now open for dinner, you can still access everything you love for breakfast or lunch, but in the evening you will enjoy the Mexican Dinner, the Roast Chicken, or the Eggplant Parmesan. Grab a table indoors or enjoy dining al fresco at one of the sidewalk cafe tables. Limited beer, wine, and mixed drinks available!

Ida Red’s | Downtown Saugatuck

Our favorite food in Saugatuck for Breakfast or Lunch … the day’s specials are fabulous, omelets are terrific, pastas are luscious, and their assortment of interesting salads is very creative. Sometimes we stop just  and sit at the counter for the Rice Pudding or Hot Fudge Sundae. Always swamped and only accept cash.
