Stroll down to the dining room for a seasonal American breakfast and begin your day. Appreciate a fresh cup of our Uncommon Coffee Roasters house-blend. Spend A Day In Someone Else’s Snowshoes

Allow us to set the scene. You wake up and wipe the sleep from your eyes in one of our customized rooms, nestled into a plush Vispring bed, to the smell of pancakes and fresh roasted coffee. After a rejuvenating soak in a sleek Waterworks shower, you wander into our warm dining room for a delicious farm-to-table breakfast.

There, you rent top-of-the-line snowshoes or cross-country skis from Fischer, Tubbs, or Redfeather for $18 a day.

It’s a short ten-minute drive to Saugatuck Dunes State Park to start your day of adventure. With steep, undeveloped dunes and more than 15 miles of trails—most of which lead to Lake Michigan—SDSP is the preeminent destination for skiers/snowshoers of all levels. Although the terrain will be steep throughout most of the park, we can recommend routes for beginners.

If you feel the need for speed, go all out and get yourself a lift ticket at one of the area ski resorts. Bittersweet (36 miles from our door in Otsego) is a terrific option that contains 350 vertical feet, 20 runs, six chair lifts, three wonder carpets, and one rope tow. If you’ve never skied before, Bittersweet, where certified ski patrol offers private, semi-private, and group lessons, is a good place to start. — *Consider going on a weekday: Not only will lift lines be shorter, but also weekday rates are a bargain at the Wickwood.

Another good skiing option is Timber Ridge Ski Area, Southwest Michigan’s oldest ski hill. Thirty-seven miles away in Gobles, Timber Ridge draws folks from all over not just for skiing and snowboarding, but also snow tubing. Nine tubing lanes mean more than enough action to go around for your kids (or you).

At the end of the long day, come home to the Wickwood and warm yourself in a comfy chair front of our fireplace with a hot cup of cider and a good book. Whether the rest of your evening involves a lovely dinner at Coast 236 or a quiet interlude of canoodling under an ultrasoft ALT For Living cashmere blanket with a loved one, life will be good.

A Friendsgiving to Remember

Ever consider taking your celebration away from home? One guest looking to create the ultimate Friendsgiving experience decided to reserve the entire inn and host their annual Friendsgiving at the Wickwood. “It was a perfect weekend of indulgence and relaxation and a real break from the ordinary,” she said. “The Wickwood team took care of every detail. They created an itinerary tailored to our specific interests, served us delicious food and drinks, and arranged for our holiday meal. We didn’t have to shop, cook, or clean up. All we had to do was walk in the door and enjoy ourselves!”

And enjoy, they did. From sunrise dune hikes to fireside nightcaps and s’mores, the eleven couples engaged in memory-making shared experiences. They explored Saugatuck’s picturesque charms, immersed themselves in the area’s wondrous natural setting, and connected in the Wickwood’s luxurious ambiance. “You can tell a pair of interior designers own the inn,” another guest noted. “It’s filled with art and antiques, every room is beautiful and cozy, and the marble bathrooms are nicer than the bathrooms most of us have at home!”

Pampered, inspired, and well-fed – thanks to Executive Chef Rose Duong’s locally-sourced, farm-to-table breakfasts and snacks – the friends relished having the inn to themselves. “The privacy that came with booking the whole inn made the weekend feel really special,” said another of the guests. “We got to hang out from morning ‘til night, with a staff to take care of our every need and so many fun things to do.”

Among those activities: dinner at Pennyroyal Café – an area favorite – followed by make-your-own galettes, featuring locally-grown fruit. Nightly fireside chats, games, and cocktails. Hikes up Mount Baldhead, and leisurely walks along Lake Michigan’s beautiful shoreline, all while taking in peak fall colors. Private cider tastings at Virtue and Modales. Freshly-made pastries and pies from Cranes. And of course, “the best Thanksgiving meal we’ve ever had!” according to one member of the group. Along with plenty of laughter and heartfelt toasts, fresh, seasonal, locally grown ingredients were the stars of the Wickwood-planned-and-procured epicurean feast. “The Wickwood team arranged for everything, from the perfectly roasted turkey to the decadent desserts,” he continued. “They know the best places to get the best food and put together a menu that made our usual Friendsgiving pale in comparison.”

Saugatuck Douglas Fall Gallery Stroll

Since 1977, Saugatuck free two-day celebration has drawn visitors to the Art Coast in the height of autumn. The Fall Gallery Stroll is a rare chance to wander in and out of the area’s unique galleries, which expand their hours and provide live demos. It’s become a great local tradition to wander in and out of the town’s dynamic galleries and studios, chat with artists, and partake in the refreshments and live music. Here, a roster of the dozen-plus participating galleries, each one showcasing a different genre of the art world.

Good Goods – This beloved fine-design and American Craft gallery is one of the original gallery stroll participants.

Jeff Blandford Gallery – A Michigan native who works out of his family’s 5-acre farm, Blandford specializes in wheel-Thrown Ceramics but is also skilled at glassblowing.

J. Petter Wine Gallery – Curated collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and glassworks—plus boutique wines, artisan cheeses, and hand-poured chocolates in a wine bar.

Marcia Perry Sculpture Studio – Wooden sculpture inspired by nature. “I try to speak for the trees,” says Perry, a graduate of the University of Michigan. “They all invite the hand to touch.”

Saugatuck Center For The Arts – For 20 years, the SCA has been Saugatuck’s hub for music, theater, education, film, and virtually any media of art you can imagine. (And some you can’t.)

Button Gallery – Michael Burmeister’s eclectic salon spans roughly 2,500 square feet of exhibition space in a historic 1906 space including an English sculpture garden. Regional and national artists in multiple media.

Mixed Media – Wide array of traditional and contemporary art specializing in up-and-coming art stars—right in the heart of Douglas’s art district.

Leben Art – Billing itself as “art for a healthy planet,” John Leben’s environmental-themed “alternative nature reality” digital images lean on computer imaging and painting.

Krista Reuter Studio – Reuter’s hand-cut and hand-torn layered paper creations are striking three-dimensional explorations of light and shadow.

Water Street Gallery – The variety of styles, from glass to painting to bronze, have been impeccably curated by the owners in two large gallery spaces and sculpture gardens.

Mr. Miller’s Art Emporium – Features more than 40 American painters, potters, jewelers, sculptors, lithographers, woodworkers and other crafters with prices ranging from $3 to $3,000.

Cynthia McKean – Colorful welded steel sculptures, both abstract and representational, large and small, in a studio and sculpture garden.

Armstrong DeGraaf Fine Art – Has a legitimate claim as Michigan’s oldest art gallery. Regardless, has a wide roster that represents more than 50 artists, nearly half of them international.

Capizzo Studio – This new gallery, opened by Michelle Pizzo and Nick Cappelletti in 2021, presents “the work of fine artists as well as outsiders working with oils, acrylics, ceramics and wood.”

An Autumn Afternoon at Crane’s Farms

With so many attractions to choose from in the area, Crane Orchards especially stands out. The sprawling farm, “200 acres of gently rolling hills just four miles inland from majestic Lake Michigan,” is an anchor of Fennville—and has been in the Crane family for 105 years and three generations. Today, it draws locals and tourists alike for countless reasons. Here are a few of our favorites.

The 20-acre corn maze, which opens every year after Labor Day, is a great way to spend some time in the great outdoors. There are two phases to the maze, and Crane’s takes pride in the creativity of each’s design, which differs from year to year. The built-in challenge of finding your way out is nearly impossible for kids (and adults) to resist. Allow 30-ish minutes—unless you’re particularly directionally challenged.

Crane’s u-pick orchards are impressive in their own right, featuring 20 different varieties of apples, ten varieties of peaches, and ten varieties of sweet cherries. The pumpkin patch is now open and on weekends you can take in the gorgeous bucolic scenery with a hayride or the kids’ “cow train.”

Crane’s Pie Pantry & Restaurant, itself half a century old, is equal parts bakery, winery, retail store with homemade jams and pastries, and down-home diner. The menu leans to humble fare such as sloppy joes and chili cheese dogs, and the wines and hard ciders are Michigan-approved.

But the real stars are Crane’s stunningly good fresh pies—sweet cherry, red raspberry, apple, and pumpkin, depending on the season. They’re ten inches, nearly all vegan-friendly, and made with the family’s traditional shortening-based crust recipe. And of course, each is packed with the best Michigan fruit, most of it picked on-site.
