If you want to play the course Golf Digest declared “a must-play when you visit West Michigan,” book a tee time at Saugatuck’s Ravines Golf Club right away. This stunning course, with its undulating landscape and perfectly manicured greens, was the vision of the legendary Arnold Palmer. Known for its friendly and professional service as well as its extraordinary value, Ravines boasts a stunning and serene setting.

Eighteen glorious holes laid out on well-kept Kentucky bluegrass 20 miles north of Saugatuck, Pigeon Creek entered the game in 2000 and has quickly become a local favorite. Located just minutes south of Saugatuck, HawksHead Links is a great choice if you want variety in your golf game. Designed by Arthur Hills, one of America’s most prolific golf architects, HawksHead is an easily walkable course, and partial cart paths do allow for convenient play for those who use them. It’s considered a challenging 18 holes, especially with the tall roughs.

Fun for both advanced players and those new to the game, Macatawa Golf Club offers undulating greens, unusual water features, and well positioned bunkers. Every detail has been strategically placed by Michigan native Ray Hearn, an award-winning designer influenced by classic style from the “Golden Age” of golf course design. Macatawa is located 20 miles north of the Wickwood, in the equally charming town of Holland.

Also in Holland, the ever popular Winding Creek sits on what was once a horse farm. Many holes are carved out of an old growth forest, with challenging lies, sharp doglegs, and scenic vistas galore. Best Bike Routes In Saugatuck Area

The intimate nature of bicycling makes it the perfect travel mode for the Wickwood Inn’s adventurous guests. Part of U.S. Bicycle Route 35 runs along the lovely Michigan shoreline, which allows riders to jump into the lake to cool off during (or from) their journey. Others pedal along the quiet winding country roads, past farms, fields, and flowers, en route to a tasting at Fenn Valley Vineyards or Virtue Ciders. Whatever your skill level, you can rent from In the Elements or Big Lake Outfitters and hit any of the following trails. More trail information is available on the Michigan Trails website.

Downtown Area

Immerse yourself in Douglas and Saugatuck’s amazing shopping options up close and personal by pedaling on a Cruiser through our friendly shopping districts. And bikes are allowed on Saugatuck’s Chain Ferry, so you can save yourself some mileage on the way to the beaches.

Shore Acres Bike Trail

Shore Acres Bike Trail, a three-mile mountain bike loop trail, is a great getaway for riders who want to work on skills – especially tight turns. Located right next to Saugatuck Dunes State Park, it offers intermediate challenges; the ascent and descent are not that challenging, and an open stretch midway is a welcome respite from the rigors of the demanding windy sections. The Saugatuck-Holland Bike Trails

This roughly 11-mile route is one of the most popular for visitors who want to see the beauty of the two towns, enjoy a little exercise, and breathe in the fresh air of western Michigan. The two options include a bike lane along 64th street or paved trails on side of 62nd Street (often referred to as the Beeline Trail) —and the route can be extended for folks seeking a longer ride, by hopping on the Blue Star Highway trail.

The Blue Star Trail

After building a series of trail-way boardwalks over marshy areas long Blue Star Highway, the city of Douglas began creating well marked bike lanes through the town. The Friends of Blue Star, upon finishing the 20-mile project, now have cyclists safely travelling a convenient stretch of bike trails throughout Allegan County.

The Lakeshore Harvest Ride

The Lakeshore Harvest Ride, held on September 13th, is a great way to explore the riches of West Michigan by actually stopping in the wineries and farms rather than rolling past them (all purchases are delivered to riders at the end of the ride). Hosted by the Friends of the Blue Star Trail this ride starts and ends in nearby Douglas, and has optional distances ranging from 15-62 miles, making this a popular option for riders of all abilities.

The Wickwood’s chef since 2022, Duong is a veteran of Chicago’s restaurant scene, doing everything from running her own Kingsbury Street Café to doing the catering in the green room for the Oprah Winfrey Show. Here, she dishes on her updated kitchen, new menu items, and life in Saugatuck.

How are the kitchen renovations going to change the Wickwood experience?

It’s going to be way more efficient. We now have almost triple the size of the old kitchen, a new oven, and an island in the middle where people can do vegetables. Before, it was crowded with two people. Now we can do multiple tickets at once. And we’ve got air conditioning. I don’t want to leave this kitchen.

What’s new with the menu?

We had a successful season last year—people really loved the menu—so we couldn’t take away some dishes, like the avocado toast on locally sourced bread. Avocado is in season now. But we also have a gluten-free asparagus hollandaise benedict with prosciutto. It’s got a salty creaminess to it and a spring twist.

What’s your background?

I grew up in the Chicago restaurant scene. Did a lot of catering, worked at Harpo Studios where I did a lot of food and beverage there. Ever since then I’ve done events for Soucie Horner. When Shea and Martin told me they bought this inn, I had no idea where Saugatuck was.

I’ve been exploring Holland, Douglas, Saugatuck, even South Haven, and finding farms that are sustainable.

Some Of The Best Michigan Art Galleries Call Saugatuck Home

With more than a century of history as a sanctuary for artists, Saugatuck, Michigan, has been called the “Art Coast” of Michigan. Its art scene is so lively that AmericanStyle Magazine named Saugatuck one of the Top 5 Art Towns In America. James Brandess makes his studio and gallery in Saugatuck’s old post office. Known for oil paintings and watercolors, Chicago native Brandess also does giclées on canvas created using atomized, pigment-based ink delivered at more than four million droplets per second.

Good Goods describes itself as “a gallery of fine design, art, and American craft,” and specializes in hand-crafted jewelry, sculpture, furniture, and ceramics. Think tea strainers made of cherry wood and rooster-shaped rocking chairs made of thin steel.

Armstrong DeGraaf Fine Art, which claims to be Michigan’s oldest art gallery, has a wide roster that represents more than 50 artists, roughly half of them international.

The Zulu word for “voices,” Amazwi celebrates African artists and artisans with a curated selection of arts, crafts, and artifacts such as an Ethiopian processional cross of nickel and a wood-carved Dogon Tribe medicine chest.

Jeff Blandford Gallery showcases the artist’s wheel-thrown ceramics inspired by the mid-century-modern aesthetic, modern architecture, interior design, and furniture design. Blandford does most of his work on a farm in Fennville, where he creates, among other things, striking clay animal heads, tiny vases, and stools.

The sleek, barn-like J. Petter Galleries in Douglas boasts two stories and 12,000 square feet dominated by paintings, drawings, sculpture, and glassworks by more than 100 artists. The space also houses Upscale Mercantile, a curated collection of found objects, and a “wine gallery,” a bar and shop full of boutique bottle selections and artisan cheeses, cured meats, and hand-poured chocolates.

One of the gifts of planning your getaway to Saugatuck, Michigan, is that time here seems to stand still. Or, at least, it slows way down. Start your antiques tour by simply strolling a block to Swell Times, a colorful store awash in sixties, seventies, and eighties memorabilia—sort of like a retro movie museum. From there it’s a short walk to Country Store Antiques, the longest family-run business downtown. It’s an old-school store, the kind of place with forgotten records, an eclectic book collection, and a surprising number of Zippo lighters. A great place for kitschy Americana.

In Fennville, you’d be wise to check out Anderson’s School House Gallery, in a ramshackle old barn that’s impossible to miss off of M-89. An eclectic selection of books, furniture, and art, Anderson’s has the added bonus of being just down the road from Crane Orchards & Winery, Fenn Valley Winery, and Virtue Farms Cider.

Also in Fennville, don’t miss Willow Bend Antiques & Garden Art. With seven barns full of furniture, restaurant ware, garden art and gifts, this is a great place to explore. Next up, visit Bird Cage Antiques, a local favorite where you might find a deer head trophy mount or a diamond in the rough amongst the vintage jewelry.

Throughout the day, you’ll find all kinds of treats, including an array of tempting afternoon sweets and a selection of locally sourced nibbles and appetizers when our guests gather later for social hour.

If you do venture beyond the comfy surroundings of the Wickwood, you’ll find plenty of ways to amuse yourself in the lovely villages of Saugatuck and Douglas without having to brave the elements. Try bowling at the quaint Alley’s Diner or a game of darts or pinball in the barrel room of Saugatuck Brewing Company. Check out what’s playing on the big screen at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts or go gallery-hopping at the more than 20 galleries and studios that call Saugatuck home.

On the outskirts of town you’ll find the little hamlet of Fennville. There, among the rolling hills and farmland, find two of our favorite places to while away an hour or two. Take a tasting tour of Fenn Valley Vineyards or Virtue Cider for an afternoon of swirling and sipping. Or if craft beer is your beverage of choice, belly up to the bar at the Guardian Brewing Company back in Saugatuck.

If you’d like a little privacy, we can arrange a private tasting for two at the J. Petter Wine Gallery downtown, where you’ll be guided through a carefully curated tasting tour of some of the world’s best vineyard varietals. A private cider tasting at Virtue Cider can also be arranged in advance. Looking for some live music to wind down your day? You’ll find an eclectic roster of live acts at Salt of the Earth or Waypost Brewing Company in Fennville.

Return to the inn for afternoon sweets and curl up in front of the fire with a good book from our library.
